Men 5th Team vs Sonning 6

The men's 5s were perhaps a little unfortunate to be on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline from their trip to Sonning 6s yesterday. After having to wait an age to get on the pitch - we hit the ground running with some beautiful play for the first 15 mins - the ball was moved around nicely from side to side with Kevin Shaw controlling the middle of the park (apparently earning himself a MoM nomination - although it was a self nomination so I'm not sure that counts) and the wide players attacking the Sonning D strongly and at speed. However, the deserved goal didn't come and Sonning caught us a little on the break with a goal from a penalty corner late in the first half. The loss of Kev and Colin Merryweather to injuries meant a reshuffle of the pack at half time and it took us a little while to regain our shape - Sonning dominate the early exchanges in the second half and extended their lead from another penalty corner. We got stronger as the game went on and pulled one back from a beautiful drive into the D from Jake that was slotted home by John Rees. However, despite our best attempts and the excitement of a penalty corner right on the whistle - we were unable to get the equalising goal that our play deserved. MoM (Captains decision) to James Parkinson for his drive and energy all over the park but DoD to James too for going to the wrong pitch and having to detour from South Berks to make the game! Thanks to Jemima for coaching today - We will work on that press next week!
