Goals galore...

WALLINGFORD'S ladies 1/2s delivered a five-star performance when beating Oxford A in the Oxfordshire Summer League.

Annabelle Neal, Hannah Satchwell, Sarah Edwards (pictured), Connie Potts and Phil Morris scored in a well-deserved 5-1 win on Tuesday. Wallingford opened the scoring early on when Neal slotted home after Morris had been denied. Oxford equalised, but Satchwell netted from a Potts cross to restore our lead at the break.

Wallingford dominated the second half and made it 3-1 when Edwards finished off a short corner. Potts then drove into the D and fired home the fourth on her reverse stick. And Morris made it 5-1 in brilliant fashion, superbly under cutting the  ball high into the net.

Our Ladies 3/4s were in White Horse Cup action a day later, earning a 1-1 draw against Abingdon C. Jenny Capon equalised in the second half to extend Wallingford's unbeaten run. A number of our Back 2 Hockey ladies were in the team and it is great to see them enjoying competitive fixtures.

Lessons in defeat

WALLINGFORD Ladies 1/2s battled hard but fell to defeat against a strong Oxford Hawks B side in the Oxfordshire Summer League.

We fielded another youthful team who are learning game by game and they faced tough opposition this week, lining up against a number of National League players. Phil Morris swept home our consolation goal following great work from Katie Shannon down the right. The ladies are next in action on Monday, June 11 against Oxford A.

Ladies' Day

WALLINGFORD HC played host to a festival of hockey, showcasing all aspects of our thriving ladies section.

With The Hithercroft bathed in glorious sunshine on Sunday, spectators were treated with some fantastic entertainment. Our Back 2 Hockey ladies took part in their first fixture, beating a combined Kidlington and Abingdon team 2-1. The event, partly funded by England Hockey, was designed to give players, who have been training regularly over the last year after returning to the sport, a taste of competitive action. Two goals from Jenny Capon saw Wallingford earn a 2-1 victory. The sides also took part in a seven-a-side round-robin tournament.

A Wallingford invitational XI, which included players from across three of our teams, then played host to international opposition in the form of American side University of Scranton. The students from Pennsylvania triumphed 1-0, Elizabeth Tolley scoring the only goal, but it was a fantastic contest especially in 25C heat. Due to the hot conditions, the match was split into four quarters of 17 minutes. Wallingford thought they had equalised, but Heather Merryweather's strike from a short corner was above the backboard.

Club secretary Claire Satchwell said: "It was a fantastic day. "Our Back To Hockey ladies enjoyed every minute and have improved so much. "A big thank you to England Hockey for the funding. "It was also great to welcome the University of Scranton to our club and to watch such a good-spirited match."
