WHC Golf Day 2016

The annual Wallingford Hockey Club Golf day took place on Friday 17th June at The Springs Golf Club. A record attendance saw 16 golfers take part in the 9 hole morning scramble, increasing to 24 for the afternoons main event.

Once the bacon baps were despatched the four groups set out in drizzly conditions, searching for a winning score. The fancied team of Stockings, Allen, Latham, and Armitage started like a train, securing 6 birdies in their opening 6 holes but could not hold their form for the final three holes and a wayward tee shot on the 9th left them scrambling for double bogey to finish with a disappointing, but still very respectable, 4 under par. All of the morning groups were under par but the eventual winners were the experienced foursome of Nigel Clements, Jerry Unsworth, Jon and Fiona Armitage who won on countback.

The weather brightened up for the afternoon round which led to some very impressive golf. Guy Hildred and Tim Chamberlain had their flag hunting hats on, securing the nearest the pin and nearest the pin in two prizes respectively. Ed ‘The Gun’ Allen’ had plenty of energy left in the tank after his honeymoon and saw his tee shot on the 14th sail past the next best marker to win the men’s longest drive. Chub Taylor picked up the longest drive prize for the ladies with a fantastic tee shot on the 6th.

On a high scoring day where you needed 40 points to get into the top 5, Rich Hawson was the champion, picking up the claret jug with a staggering 45 points. This was closely followed by defending champion Chris Burden on 44 who beat Tim Chamberlain into third on countback. Fiona Armitage won the ladies competition, closely followed by Chub Taylor and Penny Hawson in third.

The team prize, decided by the best 2 scores from three on each hole, was picked up by Charlie Stockings, Ed Allen and Rich Hawson who dovetailed perfectly to record an unassailable 96 points.

A big thanks to everyone that supported the day and also to The Springs for hosting. Roll on next year!
